History

St. Mary AARP Chapter #4435 got its start on August 8, 1988 in the Holy Cross School Cafeteria in Morgan City, when 88 senior citizens attended this formation meeting being organized by Paul Vella Sr.  The founders saw the good that was to come from this venture and became the original paid members.  Officers and board members were elected and on every first Monday of each month, meetings were held at the school with membership growing each and every month.  Covered dish suppers were featured and we had speakers, entertainers, and more which made prospective members want to join. Our very first health fair was held there and for a few years all of this continued as such.  Well we finally “outgrew” Holy Cross and moved our meetings and health fairs to the Morgan City Municipal Auditorium Ballroom where the organization reached a membership of over 4,000 members – making our chapter the “largest in the United States”.  We even started our own Mardi Gras Krewe and for the past 25 years have held a court and ball which you can read about on its page on this website.  Several years ago the St Mary Parish Council purchased the old KC building at 4014 Chennault St. in Morgan City.  This became our new and permanent location where we can stage events for seniors 7 days a week.
